Staying at Hallin Bank
When you make your booking, please be aware that you are coming to a remote rural location. It is part of the Lake District National Park and is designated an Environmentally Sensitive Area and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. All aspects of life here are weather-dependent and local people have a tradition of self-sufficiency. The charm of Hallin Bank and the beauty and tranquillity of Martindale are the reasons you want to be here, and countless visitors have had a wonderful and comfortable holiday. However, it is not like living in a town and you should not come with the expectation of easy access to all services which you may be used to at home. Our way of life tends to be "green", both out of principle and from necessity.
Detailed instructions about domestic arrangements are given in a Handbook for tenants on arrival. Please note the following summary of essential points.
- We expect you to do your own housework and to leave all rooms thoroughly clean and tidy, as you would wish to find them. There is no "Mrs Mop"! Vacuum cleaner and all cleaning materials are provided.
- Duvets, pillows and extra blankets are provided. Bed-linen and towels are not provided.
- Electricity is charged separately by units consumed. In The Fold, the basic heating is by electric storage heaters and the Aga. These and the hot water are on an off-peak tarriff. A butane (bottled) gas heater is also provided. The Chalet can also be heated by a butane gas heater.
- Hallin Bank is not on mains water. We have beautiful soft water, filtered from springs in the fields above the house and passed through a UV unit. Drainage is to a septic tank in the field below the house. This is a sustainable but sensitive system: you need to be careful what you put down the drains and in very dry weather you might be asked to economise on water consumption.
- Recyclable rubbish (glass bottles, cans, foil, hard plastics, cardboard, newspapers) may be left in the boxes in the outhouse, as long as you follow the wash 'n squash rule. We then take it to a recycling centre. Fruit and vegetable waste goes to compost bins in the garden. There is no rubbish collection from Hallin Bank and no other rubbish may be left behind.
- There is no telephone in The Fold or The Chalet. In an emergency, you can of course ask to use the landline in Hallin Bank farmhouse. You will get a mobile signal from near the church or - for some networks - in the field above Hallin Bank. There is a public phone box about 1/4 mile away.
- Satellite television, digital radio, CD player and video player are provided in The Fold, and a CD player in The Chalet. There is no internet access.
- Pets are welcome but there must be discussion first, since this is sheep country and dogs have to be well controlled.
- Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the buildings.
